Playing with the big boys and Meeting some new friends

Hey guys and welcome back to my blog, Lots of Warhammer 40k to talk about including the 40k open day and Warhammer fest!!

But first I want to talk about the recent midlands interclub challenge between ws10gaming and some professional tournament players.

Yep ws10gaming descended upon WHW to play some games against some guys from Redditch wargaming club and the good, the bad and the Dudley, whose every own Gareth Donelly had set up the midlands interclub challenge to get some games against likeminded people in the midlands of all places!

Gaz is well known in the tournament scene and is a member of the the welsh etc team who recently won the home nations tournament and will be part of the team that goes to Serbia to play against other countries for the pride of being etc champions.
Now I was abit nervous against playing against experienced players as I thought id be beaten in a couple of turns but as they say to be the best you have to beat the best!
So my first game was against Gaz Donelly who not only is the organiser of the event but is well known in the tournament scene and is a member of the welsh etc team who recently won the home nations tournament and will be part of the team that goes to Serbia to play against other countries for the pride of being etc champions.

no pressure then!

Gaz had a necron army that didn’t look like it had many units on paper and having never played necrons before it would be a good learning curve against a seasoned pro.
Now before I start I want to say Gaz is a thoroughly nice guy, we got talking a lot about how we both got into the hobby and then he went through his list explaining what certain squads did and what they were equipped with.

Gaz stated that the only reason I was playing him was because 2 of his team didn’t want to play me as I would of caused huge devastation to their armies, something I was quite proud of, whether its true or not I will never find out but I’m sticking with it.
So unfortunately these battle reps aren’t going to be as detailed as usual as I was trying to concentrate on what was going on rather than write down things which would of prolonged the games, what I do know is I managed to get invisibility with Coteaz again which I threw onto Pasks squad but Gaz quickly explained that this is something that necrons love as they really like to snapshot at things as they gain more shots the more they snapshoot, hmm interesting.

Gaz also likes to attack with his scythes on his flyers an he ends up flying units over the enemy and makes slashing attacks. This is how he managed to get rid of all three tanks as well as my wyvern. This left just my infantry and reserves and when Coteaz failed to get invis off on the blob squad then all Gaz’s units descended upon the infantry like dogs round a bone.

Needless to say that the battle didn’t last long after that, with Gaz tabling me in turn 4 with all 5 yes thats 5 of his flying croissants on and all his barges surrounding my aegis line firing shot after shot into its occupants.

Even though I lost it was a great game and Gaz was very complimentary about my list saying it was really good but just not great against necrons, he even gave me hints with what to do for future games should I take the same list.

After the game is was a trip to Bugmans for a fat bloke, no that’s not me, but the burger I went for although after eating it I did feel like the name it was given.

For my second game I played Sam Cook or cookie as he is also known. Sam chose my list rather than Nigels as he told me, he knew how to beat guard,

Sam was similar to my army in that we had both taken an aegis line and quad guns and basically both decided to sit back and fire upon each other. This game was kill points so every unit destroyed meant a kill point received
Now on this game I did not get invisibility (first time ever!) but I did get outflank d3 units from Creeds warlord trait so I decided to keep the punishers and vanquisher off the board.
Before we stated I reminded him that I had Coteaz who could attempt to steal, he laughed and said ok and I rolled and got a 6! I began by ignoring the movement phase and going to the shooting phase my wyvern zeroed in on his sorcerer and got 3 direct hits killing 5 of the squad that he was attached to and also taking the sorcerer to 1 wound, my lascannon teams also managed to cause a bit of devastation in his line killing a number of chaos space marines.

His turn began with his flying daemon prince swooping towards my guardsman, he fired upon my wyvern a got a pen and 2 glances which resulted in it blowing up! His rocket launchers fired upon my aegis but didn’t do a thing
My reserves came on in turn 2, so the vendetta and pcs, Valkyrie and vet squad with inquisitor and more importantly the tank squad all came on unfortunately his quad gun used interceptor against my vendetta which successfully jinked but could now snapshoot only.
I managed to get a 5 for deploying my tank squad which meant I could choose the side I came on and chose the side where his reduced space marine squad was as well as his sorcerer.
I managed to get kill a few more of the chaos space marine unit but didn’t manage to kill them all. Now unfortunately due to the loss of my wyvern I wasn’t able to fire upon his forces behind the aegis line. I managed to get a couple of lucky hits with my master of ordinance but Sam managed to make his cover saves.

Sam managed to bring on his bike squad and his Talons and brought them on right in front of my tanks. Sam managed to incapacitate one of the punishers and remove a weapon (heavy bolter) from Pasks punisher.
I retaliated and fired all tanks into his space marines manning the quad gun and managed to kill them all, meaning he couldn’t now fire his quad gun. My flyers went after his daemon prince and managed to get him down to 1 wound before Sam flew him off the board in his turn. Sam then managed to kill some of my troops behind my aegis line using his obliterators and missile launchers. Again he attacked my tanks with his bikes and talons and managed to blow up the punisher and the punisher however the explosions took some of his bikes with it.

Our game ended at the end of turn 5 with his HQ sorcerer on 1 wound and hiding away in a ruin, Pask had been killed on his turn 5 and some of my troops were dead in behind the aegis. We totalled up the kill points and Sam won 6 – 3 And even though he claimed he would of wiped me out turn 6, I had first turn still had had a sneaky surprise in the form of an inquisitor with a psycolllum accompanying my vet squad with 3 melta guns that were about to jump out of the valk and burn face at BS10!
I would of liked to see his face when he realised that was happening!!

All in all though it was another great day out with the ws10gaming lads against some top tourney players! Even though I was dreading playing the likes of Gaz, he and the rest of the lads we played were really nice and I really enjoyed it and the main thing was that everyone had a great time.

This brings me to recent events.

So 2 weeks ago, I descended on WHW for the 40kopen day. I managed to get there around half 9 (doors opened at 10) and joined the queue which has snaked around the side of the building and back into the car park.
Once we were let in, I was handed a pass and then made our way up the stairs to the gaming room. All the gaming tables has been removed from the hall and had been replaced by a black library stand, some railing to the cash points and then a separate set of railing to the forgeworld shop area. The forgeworld shop area was were you could pick up all the pre-releases such as the knight castigator, the new tyranid beastie, the gal vorbak 30k marines, salamander firedrakes and Vulkan as well as 2014 exclusive models.

I must admit it almost felt as though you were forced to buy something at the forgeworld section as you had to wait your turn to be seen by someone, whereas I had ideas that people would all cram around a stall and be able to just look and then buy if you felt like it. When it was my turn to be seen I walked up with my brother who purchased an event only Navigator for me! Top man! That took the pressure off me as such, I made enquiries about models for some friends on twitter (@Bambambeast) and also asked about the castigator knight to which I was told that they had all gone and it was only 10.15!

Now I had great plans of spending a bucket load of money on some new Guard stuff but ended up not buying anything as I was stuck in two minds with what to get, Now I was undecided whether to plump up the cash for something big, such as the knight castigator, which had fortunately gone, some superheavy tanks such as the Macharius Vanquisher or Nathans suggestion of an Macharius Omega, which would of blown my budget straight out of the water, or buy a few additions of smaller stuff such as maybe a couple of thud guns and maybe another tank. Notice how im saying maybe as I still havnt made up my mind! Also I was thinking of maybe buying an imperial knight as Brian (petes knight) wants some friends to play with!

What I did do though was meet @JamesBragg1984 (james) and @DornsTemplar (Paul), was really good meeting both of these guys and was good to put a face to the names, I didn’t get to meet @gcp129 (gareth) who I found out had gone straight to bugmans after he had got inside WHW!

The rest of my day I spent looking at the various hobby demonstrations which was outback in a separate area, these demonstrations showed off various aspects of the modelling side of the hobby such as painting, terrain building, weathering etc. Also present were some of the GW & FW employees that had built the new models on show. I managed to speak to the lady who had designed the new tyranid beastie and managed to read a few extracts from the new nid book
I then spent abit of time in the hall of miniatures where some armies were discreetly ‘out on manoeuvres’ such as the tyranids / necrons / space wolves and a craftworld of Eldar.
Also sneakily announced at the event was something called Warhammer fest, I was only aware of this due to some of the tweets that I was copied into and it was originally tweeted by @RedSteel:Preston, I managed to track down James Bragg again to see if he could explain more about the event.

He explained that it was a weekend event over the 11/12th October and was to be held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. It would be similar to the openday in that there will be master classes and seminars about forthcoming models, codexes etc. Also over the weekend will be exclusive and new release models available to purchase and on the Sunday will be golden daemon painting competition. Each day will cost £20 so £40 for the weekend and I was told that each day would have the same seminars and master classes. The event would be limited to 2500 tickets per day and the first tickets were available now! Needless to say I picked up a ticket for the Sunday on the spot.
I had another meander around the hobby area and then we all decided to leave.

So I decided to pool my money and hopefully buy something big this payday with my left over money from the event, I think I may get some more tanks, or maybe some artillery, but then again I do like the knight!

May the emperor protect!

Double Trouble and the big W

Please do not adjust your screens my friends, you are not seeing things! I really have updated this blog with 3 posts in a week!

This latest report covers my latest battle, a doubles game in which I allied with Nathan (@ninjanath) against Ade (@artfuldodgeruk) and lukan (@roguepsyker)

The rules were quite simple, anything we liked as long as it was in the 1000 points limit for each person, so effectively 2k each team.
Now I for one have never faced off against tau before, and even though they have taken a recent beating with the new rules, I know that Ade plays them differently to anything that I have read or heard about via podcasts or tournament reports, so facing them would be a surprise and also a test.

In the case of lukan, I imagined that he would bring along 1k of Chaos deamons and then constantly spam summoning to effectively bring on more and more forces and overwhelm us.
After conversing with Nathan over twitter, we managed to come up with a combined list and some tactics that we believed would cover all bases and cause terror in the xenos lines.

Well after picking up Lukan and Graham on the night I discovered that Lukan had not brought any daemons with him and had play tested it the previous night at GW Birmingham! Inquisitively asking what list he had brought, I got told that I would find out soon enough on the battlefield, it wasn’t until I picked up graham who quickly blurted out about Lukans CSM’s, that I found out!!!

Upon arriving (slightly late I might add due to me having to babysit my son until the mrs came home), I discovered that Nathan who had been playing Ade in a 1850 points battle beforehand had lost to him. This didn’t bode well, as I was relying on Nathan to effectively lead our team whilst I mopped up smaller units or remnants of destroyed ones.

So on to the game, We rolled for mission and got emperors Will with Dawn of War set up. Emperors will is where each person lays down an objective marker in their own half and they count as 3 victory points to the player that controls them
Ade and Lukan won the roll for deployment and elected to go first as well. Along their deployment zone, ade placed his firewarriors within some ruins on the right of their deployment zone with some other firewarriors and shield drones on the far right behind some fence line. On the far left ade placed his hammerhead tank behind some fence line again supported by some more
Lukan deployed a unit of cultists next to Ades firewarriors behind the fence line. Whilst some regular chaos space marines joined the hammererhead. Behind some ruins on the left hand side of their deployment Lukan positioned a level 1 pysker as well as Abaddon and his unit of terminator bodyguards

Abaddon and his posse

Abaddon and his posse

For our deployment Nathan elected to keep the majority of his list off the board and I reserve only deploying his master of the forge behind some ruins in our deployment zone and also his relic scorpius whirlwind.
For my deployment i decided to put everything I had on the left flank of the table behind some ruins and effectively bubble wrap my wyvern . Both punishers were positioned at the front so that their front AV14 armour would absorb any shot taken at the wyvern. I positioned the chimeras behind the punishers and placed coteaz in the middle of all the tanks with my lvl 2 pysker in the ruins near the master of the forge.

Before Lukan and Ade began I attempted to seize the initiative with Coteaz but failed both times. So turn 1 began with Ade and Lukan firing upon the relic scorpius with the aid of 4 markerlights, This enabled the cover to be taken away whilst also increasing the BS of a chosen model. The model they chose was the hellbrute who levelled its lascannon and fired its shots into the scorpius’ armour, causing a penetrating hit, Lukan prayed to the dark gods for a 6 to make the scorpius explode and they must of been listening as he rolled that 6 meaning the scorpius was removed from the tabletop!!

Lukan attempted then to use tzeetch firestorm from his psyker however he managed to roll a double 1 meaning he had to check the perils chart where he discovered that the pysker lost a wound and also forgot a random spell for the entirety of the battle.
Ade began focusing on one of chimeras that was slightly positioned behind the other vehicles on the left flank and was in LoS to his hammerhead. With a massive crash the round shattered into the chimeras side armour, The force of the shot penetrated the chimeras armour and subsequently caused the vehicle to explode, forcing the 10man squad of Kasrkin to jump out.

The cluster of firewarriors around the hammerhead focused on the Master of the Forge which was hiding behind the ruins and brought his bulky frame into their sights. The majority of the shots crashed into the ruins and those that did find their mark were easily deflected away from the Master of the forge via his forcefield

The final act of the turn saw the chaos space marines also target the master of the forge, and unlike the firewarriors before them, their shots did find their mark, removing a wound from the master of the forge who staggered back behind better cover.
The Emperors finest now began their turn, with both punishers moving forward towards the fence line that protected the firewarriors and cultists. As they moved forward on the left flank, a thunderous roar was heard overhead on the right flank and the crimson fist droppod shot from the sky and came to rest behind the hammerhead. As the massive iron doors opened, a 10man marine squad charged out, meltaguns firing at the rear of the hammerhead. Unfortunately, the meltaguns failed to hit the hammerhead and it remained unscathed, Upon seeing the meltaguns miss, the marines armed with bolters opened fire on the tau tank, removing 1 HP when a shot glanced its new age armour.

On the left flank, coteaz who had advanced with the punishers and used the tanks as cover managed to imbue the psychic powers of invisibility and prescience on the 2 tanks. Once the spells had completed, the tanks ‘disappeared from sight’ to all those that stood against the imperium. Upon receiving the blessings, Knight commander Pask ordered the tanks to open fire upon the fenceline in front of him and the firewarrior squad that cowered behind. 20 shots, with another 20 rending and all with prescience, slammed into the xenos lines and even though 1 shield drone managed to take a couple of shots the remaining 28 shots that got through the defences and wiped the xenos filth from the battlefield.

The wyverns targeting systems locked onto the firewarrior squad within the ruins at the backfield, its mortar shells slamming into the building with unerring accuracy. Once the smoke cleared from the shells, it was found that 3 firewarriors had perished under the bombardment.
Turn 2 began with Abaddon and his terminator bodyguards moving towards to area in which the punisher tanks were last seen in. The hammerhead tank also moved moved and towards the same area, its targeting systems, scanning for any sign of the tanks but coming up short. The chaos psyker again attempted to cast its last remaining power, successfully casting the malediction power onto the space marines that has emerged from the droppod, however the successful power came at a huge cost as again the psyker perils and again he ended up taking a wound, meaning that Lukan and ade watched on as their only psyker dropped dead in front of them!!

The successful tzeetch firestorm took hold of the space marine unit and claimed the lives of 2 of them whilst the other marines successfully managed to avoid the brunt of the dark art.
Even though the Punishers were invisible the markerlights attempted to improve the situation by marking the probable tanks location by rolling a 6, it was a tall order, but one that they managed to achieve as 1 markerlight managed to ‘lock on’ to the punishers by rolling a 6! Fortunately when the markerlight attempted to engage the punishers, the lock was lost and the shot did not touch the punisher. Another 2 markerlights targeted the SM marines from the droppod and their benefits helped the firewarriors around the hammerhead, kill 2 of the marines with the remaining 2 marines dodging the shots which cut down their brothers. The hellbrute then targeted the remaining 2 space marines and fired its krak missiles as well as its lascannon into the marines in an attempt to destroy the unit, however the monstrosities firepower missed their marks as the 2 space marines managed to survive

rawr!

rawr!

The beginning of the alliance turn saw the emergence of the Fire-raptor and another droppod, The droppod coming into land next to the other droppod, again the 10man marine squad jumped out firing all weapons at the hammerhead. Unfortunately all the bolter shots pinged off the armour however the heavy flamer ignited its flammable spray all over the hammerhead and managed to detroy the tank by taking the last hp.
Coteaz again managed to conjure invisibility onto the punisher tanks however as the tanks disappeared from sight from the enemy, something went wrong with the spell and coteaz suffered perils and a wound, unfortunately the wound was sufficient enough for him to forget one of the psychic abilities know to him and upon the roll of the dice he forgot invisibility!

is it a bird is it a plane no its the fireraptor

is it a bird is it a plane no its the fireraptor

The fireraptors engines roared across the battlefield with its targeting reticules scanning for potential targets. In seeing the hellbrute slightly out of cover, the order was given to engage and the autocannons fired their rounds into the monstrosity removing 1 wound. The 5 man chaos marine squad that had been protecting the hammerhead were then decimated when the cannons from the fireraptor, swung round and unleashed their ammunitions into their ranks.
The 10man kasrkin squad that had jumped out of their chimera transport just before it blew up now surveyed the battlefield in front of them. As they advanced into the ruin in front of them, they caught glimpse of the advancing Abaddon and his terminator bodyguards, In seeing the advancing threat, the sergeant barked out orders to fire and 3 plasma guns and 7 lasguns fired through the ruins and managed to kill 1 terminator. Knight Commander Pask also recognised the threat of the chaos lord and ordered the punishers to target and engage the advancing terminators. Once the smoke cleared from the 40 punisher shots, the advancing terminators had been whittled down to just abaddon and 1 terminator with 3 having been killed by the armoured division.

lets go for a walk

lets go for a walk

Turn 4 started with the firewarriors using markerlight support to fire 22 shots into the space marines that had dropped into their back lines from the droppods, however the space marine armour stood firm as only 4 brothers died from the xenos rounds.
The hellbrute staggered forward, blood pouring from the wound caused by the fireraptor. As it emerged from the ruin it descended into a crazed state firing all of it weapons at the circling aircraft however the supreme flying skills of the pilot as well as the reinforced armour meant that none of the shots hit the flyer.

A number of firewarriors advanced forward and spotted a gap within the ruins where Inquisitor coteaz had moved following the advancement of the punishers. Three of the shots found their target however the armour protecting the lord of Formosa activated and deflected each shot.
Abaddon and his solitary terminator bodyguard charged the punishers, and began striking the sides of the punisher with their weapons, abaddons strikes managed to punch a hole in the side of the tank, the force of which shook the crew inside meaning the punisher cannon would only be able to fire snap shots next turn and dropping the punisher down to 2 hp.

abaddon assaults

abaddon assaults

The alliance turn 4 began with the Space Marines advancing over the bodies of their fallen brothers and laying down rounds of bolter shots supplemented by melta and flamer fire. The cultists behind the fenceline stood no chance against the overwhelming firepower and the unit was eradicated from the battlefield. The chaos space marines bore witness to the massacre but they too bore the same fate, cut down as the rounds of the Fireraptors autocannons smashed into their lines.
The punisher tank drivers threw the tanks into reverse to gain some space between themselves and Abaddons attacks, Pasks tanks punisher cannon whirring as the 20 rending shots flew into abaddon and his solitary bodyguard. As all good bodyguards do, the terminator stood in the face of the onslaught on his master and crumpled to the ground as the shots pierced his armour and ripped apart his body.

The wyvern in the backfield switched targets from the ruins in had been targeting in the previous turns and instead targeted the unit of cultists holding the objective on the right flank. The first shell zeroed in on the cultists, smashing directly into their lines. This was quickly followed by three other shells thundering into the cultists and obliterating the chaos hencemen from the objective.
And this is where the game ended. Unfortunately due to the fact that myself, Lukan and Graham had turned up later than anticipated and the fact that Nathan lived 1hr and half away from petes we decided to call the game after turn 4.
As we totalled up the score we found that the emperors finest had prevailed over the traitorous CSM and xenos 10 – 1 as we controlled 3 of the 4 objectives (worth 3 points each) and had linebreaker, whilst Ade and Lukan had firstblood for killing the relic scorpius.

That’s it folks I have my first WIN!!!! Que fanfare and dancing girls!!!!

Even though we finished after turn 4 after a brief discussion between Nathan and myself and then myself and Lukan on the way home we believed that in turn 5 we would of potentially cleared up Ades and Lukans lists. The one unit we looked at that we might have had trouble with was Abaddon himself. We had air superiority with the fireraptor and all they had left was ground troops and the hellbrute and whilst abaddon was taking chunks out of one of the punishers, pask could of ‘full throttled’ his tank and sped off leaving abaddon in no-mans land. Once the hellbrute was dead they had nothing really that would have been able to deal with the AV14 vehicles.

In conclusion to the game it was real fun even though I think we overwhelmed them with our selections, but then again we was told to bring anything as long as it fitted within 1000 points! But maybe the fireraptor may have been overkill but it’s a staple of nathans list and anyone who has played him, knows the fireraptor will be included.

I was surprised that Lukan didnt bring his deamons and feel that if he had done so it may have been a tighter match especially with the things that could be summoned onto the board and also he may have had the opportunity to field a flying daemon prince which could of dealt with the raptor.

Personally, the wyvern and punishers were excellent for me. This was the first game that the punishers survived past turn 1 and ade for one was amazed at the devastation they dealt. Im not sure he really knew what they were or what they could do as im sure if he did he would of targeted them instead of the chimera.

Again A fantastic night of gaming with the #ws10gaming lads and my third of 7th edition, I have another planned in a couple of weeks at WHW with the #ws10gaming lads in the midlands interclub challenge in which we will play against seasoned vets and tournament players and even though ill be probably spanked out of sight im looking forward to getting some tips etc from some of the best players in the land.

But that report is for another post, so for now friends

May the emperor protect.

On Saturday 21st, I had an unscheduled game against Pete again. This was due to the fact that we both had no children to look after (thanks to the grandparents by the way!)

Due to the unscheduled game, we both agreed to bring the lists from our original game and see what we could do differently and personally for me, hope to change the outcome.
For this game we managed to get the relic and hammer and anvil deployment. Pete set up first and deployed his landraider front and centre near the relic with his knight titan on his right flank, his thunderfire was hidden in some ruins, taking past events into account where I blew it up early doors last game. (if you want to know what our lists were just refer to the previous post ‘welcome to 7th’) Again he reinforced some ruins with the thunderfires ability, on his left flank and put his devastator centurions in them. His assault centurions hid within his landraider along with tiggy. 1 change that Pete did for this game was to utilise a rhino and some tact marines.

Again I seemed to get the side that had hardly any terrain! ( I must invest in an aegis defence line or something similar) Due to the fact that Pete had deployed his landraider and imperial knight so far forward I was unable to really get any los blocking for any of my tanks or infantry. Therefore as a result I ended up sticking my manticore on my left flank, along with a unit of sniper scouts within the ruins. On my right flank I placed both my punisher tanks flanked by the ravenwing command squad. In the ruins on the right I placed the second unit of scouts and then ended up placing the blob squad with coteaz and the chimera in the middle of the field but toward the back of my deployment area.

Just before we kicked off pete mentioned that he tabled another of our group, nigel on turn 3 of his previous match with the same list, (no pressure then!)

Being the relic and with Pete having first turn he immediately moved the landraider forward and bailed out his squad from it. This allowed tiggy to jump out of the landraider and then pick up the relic.
Pete then proceeded to place his droppod into my deployment, so that if the pod didn’t scatter, its occupants would be able to assault both tanks. Yes you have guessed it, Pete rolled a direct hit on the scatter dice and out swarmed his squad of 10 sternguard armed with meltas.

caption id=”attachment_252″ align=”alignnone” width=”300″]Damn Droppods Damn Droppods[/caption]

Even though I had positioned the tanks like an idiot, somehow I had managed to position coteaz within 12” of them! That meant that Petes sternguard squad would be attacked with the blob utilising Coteaz’ ability of ‘im expecting you’
The out of sequence attack by the blob managed to kill 1 of the sternguard with Pete managing to explode the lead punisher (with pask) sky high.
Petes centurions then let rip and proceeded to take 2 wounds off coteaz and kill 5 of the blob squad whilst the tact marines got lucky and killed 2 ravenwing bikers. All of this happened whilst his knight destroyed my heavy weapons teams on my left flank.

So even before I moved a model I had lost my HQ, one of my most hard hitting units and half of the most mobile unit. Not a great start!

In my first turn I reversed the second punisher backwards to the edge of the board so that they could fire upon the sternguard, Coteaz managed to cast invisibility onto the remains of the blob squad however upon doing so I managed to roll 3 6’s! so checking the perils table I wanted to avoid a 2 which would take his last wound and kill Coteaz and guess what? Yep I rolled a 2! So Coteaz was removed from the battle.

My main objective was to get rid of the sternguard in my deployment zone as I knew that next turn they would literally destroy everything, so I fired the punisher cannon, 2 scout sniper squads, the remaining infantry and finally the multi laser and heavy stubber from the chimera at the 9 sternguard and managed to kill……… 5 of them, somehow 4 of them saved and looked to assault next round. I fired my manticore last, at the landraider and managed to get a hit causing the landraider to snapshot next turn and removing a hp.

In turn 2 Petes sternguard assaulted the punisher but somehow the punisher managed to survive, However 1 of the scout squads were not as lucky as the centurion devastators managed to wipe them from the board by firing their lascannons into them. Petes landspeeder with multimelta then came on and flew onto the board behind the manticore where Pete managed to incapacitate it for a round by making it snapshoot. The rest of Petes forces luckily for me missed their targets and I managed to get a 2nd turn in where before, I feared the worst.

punishing the punisher

punishing the punisher

My second turn involved my punisher then moving so that it could attack the sternguard and the combination of the 20 punisher shots, infantry lasgun shots and chimera shots managed to kill the sternguard this time. My 1 remaining ravenwing biker and librarian moved behind some ruins where they looked to attack the landraider next turn. I then rolled for my reserves but this time my vendetta and Valkyrie remained off the table!!

Turn 3 and Pete started by melting my manticore with his landspeeder. His knight fired down upon the remaining guardsman killing 5 of them whilst his rhino moved up his right flank looking to sweep around the back of my forces and his Centurions managed to kill the last ravenwing biker leaving the librarian all alone.

In this turn I felt it was all about survival unless I could get both flyers on. I first rolled for the vendetta which came on but I failed the roll for the Valkyrie so, the valk and contingent of vets remained off the table. I manoeuvred the vendetta and went straight for the landraider as it still remained my number 1 priority. The vendettas 3 twinlinked lascannons fired upon the landraider and didn’t even make a scratch!!! This was not good. My Librarian drove towards the landraider whilst the remaining guardsman and punisher moved forward, the remaining scout sniper squad shot at the centurions but the centurions shrugged off the shots.

the immovable force

the immovable force

Turn 4 . Whoop I made it too turn 4!!!! And that’s where the celebrations end!. Petes knight turned and fired into the ruins where the remaining scouts were, killing 3 of them whilst the landspeeder moved towards the remaining guardsmen. The devastators fired upon the punisher and blew it sky high whilst the landraider attempted to fire upon the vendetta but missed.

In the final deaththrows of the game I again fired upon the landraider with the vendetta. And again did nothing!! Seriously I could not catch a break!
The only good thing that happened in turn 4 was that the Valkyrie was now on so it made a beeline for the landraider and dropped off the troops, 2 melta guns and 1 plasma gun proceeded to shoot at the landraider and managed to take another hp off the vehicle and that was my turn done.

Final turn saw all of Petes models congregate around the remnants of my forces in the middle of the table and landraider. The devastators fired upon the remaining guardsman wiping them out whilst the knight, landspeeder and tactical marines swarmed around the vets. It’s safe to say that they didn’t last long and that where I called it.

run away!

run away!

Pete had lost his 10man sternguard squad whilst I had left a primaris psyker, the vendetta and Valkyrie and 2 scouts. So as Mortal Kombat used to say FLAWLESS VICTORY!
After the game we discussed certain things that I could off done such as deploying right up on the 24” line with the blob and punishers. It was the first time I had played the relic and Pete said that if I had managed to get the relic in the blob then it would have been nigh on impossible for him to get it back. As always I learnt a lot of things, and even though I seem to go defensive every game I just need to be more confident and go for the throat!.

One small victory for me was the fact that I lasted until turn 5 against Petes tournament list!

And my next game of 7th was not that far away, but for now friends

May the Emperor Protect.

Hello to 7th

Welcome back all to my blog on my continuation into 40k.

Where have you been I hear you all ask?, well firstly let me apologise for the downtime between blog posts, the reason for the delay is purely that I havnt played much since my last game and also 7th edition has dropped.
Since 7th edition has come out I have been reading through the rule book trying to look at any big changes that have occurred that would influence the imperial guard.

Luckily it seems that our codex was written with 7th in mind and hence we havnt really been affected by the new rules. The only things that seem to have altered from a guard perspective is that barrage no longer causes pinning which is the same with sniper rifles and that ordinance weapons result in other weapons only snap firing which affects the leman russ battle tank.

One of the good alterations that affects barrage now though is that shots affect all floors of buildings, so no more hiding on the bottom floor of ruins or buildings because that manticore or wyvern blast is going to land right on top of your head, well unless it scatters!
So this new post obviously means one thing, I had a game of 40k and not just any game but my first game of 7th edition!

Yes that’s correct WS10gaming convened at Petes once again for our first forays into 7th edition, some of the lads had already played 1 or 2 games of 7th and were able to point out some of the changes to the guys that hadn’t.
Before meeting up I was informed that I would be playing the master of ceremonies, Pete, himself. Now I knew Pete had a space marine list but I also knew he had a contingent of Grey Knights and with the inclusion of the new psychic phase in 7th edition I knew for a fact that he would be utilising his grey knights against my list for the extra warp charges, so imagine my surprise when he unveiled his space marine list!

Now I had read about the psychic phase a little before meeting up for the game and felt that my usual inclusion of one level 1 psyker would need some back up and therefore I decided to include some allies into my list.
So one of the main changes involving the psychic phase is that you gain 1 warp charge for every lvl psyker that you have in you army and then roll 1D6 and BOTH players get that amount of additional charges. Knowing this I decided to upgrade my lvl 1 IG psyker to a lvl 2.
I also included a detachment of Dark Angels being led by a DA librarian on a bike who I also upgraded to level 2.
Why a librarian on a bike I hear you ask especially with a change to the jink rule (nominate to jink and can only snap fire weapons next turn). Well by including a librarian on a bike I could include a ravenwing command squad as they would be able to take the field without using a FOC slot and being Black knights they get a +3 save which is better than the jink of 4+, so this would allow me to attack without ever requiring to jink
My third and final psyker was everyones favourite inquisitor Torquemeda Coteaz, who is a standard level 2 psyker.
This meant I had a basic warp charge pool of 6.

So my line up for the game was as follows:
• Knight commander pask in punisher
• Additional punisher
• Platoon command squad
• 3 x infantry squads
• Lvl 2 pysker
• Vet squad with 2 melta and plasma with grenadiers doctrine
• Heavy weapons squad w/ 3 lascannons
• Chimera
• Manticore
• Vendetta
• Valkyrie
• DA librarian on a bike lvl 2
• Ravenwing command squad
• 2x 5man scout squads
• Coteaz (IG)
Petes list was:
• Tiggy
• Coteaz (SM)
• Centurion assault squad
• Centurion devastator squad
• Landraider
• 2 x squad of tactical marines
• Imperial knight
• Thunderfire cannon

So back to the game and we rolled for missions and got the scouring (6 objectives) and hammer and anvil deployment. With the scouring mission we had to place the objectives face down so that we were not sure of the points associated with them I placed my three objectives with 1 in my deployment zone near my blob squad, 1 on the top floor of some ruins and the third the other side of the ruins. Pete placed his similar with 1 on the top floor of his ruins, 1 in his deployment zone and 1 the other side near to where his landraider had deployed.

brian and friends

brian and friends

Both of us managed to get invisibility, whilst my other psychic powers consisted of misfortune, foreboding, 4+ invul save and prescience
I managed to get first turn and proceeded to target his landraider which housed his assault centurions, tiggy and coteaz. With the new rules on vehicles (needing a 7+ for them to explode) I knew that destroying the landraider would be a priority.

Therefore I fired my manticore, lascannon heavy weapons teams and missile teams within the blob squad at the landraider and after the smoke had cleared I found that I had managed to knock off 1 hp from its thick armour.
My sniper squads received their orders and though their sniper scopes targeted the devastator centurions in Petes backfield. Even though the shots found their targets the reinforced exoskeletons of the centurions shrugged off the shots and made their 2+ saves.
Unfortunately after checking their targeting recticles, the rest of my forces found they were out of range for any more firing so the imperial psykers attempted to cast some defensive powers on the units before them. IG Coteaz managed to conjure invisibility and quickly cast it upon the blob squad however the imperial psyker failed to harness the 4+ invul save which left the lascannon squad prime target for Pete’s forces.

Petes first turn started with him dropping his droppod into the heart of my forces. As the droppod came to rest, the iron doors dropped open and two five man sternguard squads came charging out. The first squad targeted my lascannon heavy weapons squad and managed to wipe them from the face of the battlefield whist the other squad proceeded to fire melta guns into the backup punisher causing it to explode! The earth shook under the guardsmans feet as Brian, the imperial knight moved up the battlefield, its cannon frantically searching for the large grouping of guardsman however due to the invisibility spell, the targeting system was unable to find them, as they were cloaked from its sights.
In the final act of shooting the devastator centurions let rip with their missiles and managed to kill one of the scouts within the ruins.
Tiggy, SM coteaz and the assault centurions abandoned the landraider and moved toward the imperial guard lines but fell short. Tiggy began to mutter some ancient words, attempting to cast invisibility onto the sternguard but something went wrong within the casting and he managed to perils, taking one wound in the process.

droppod assault

droppod assault

The second turn started with the vendetta pilot receiving orders to engage, swooping in from the clouds to target the thunderfire cannon in the backfield. Unfortunately the command for the Valkyrie pilot was lost over the network, interference muffling the order, so the Valkyrie pilot continued his holding pattern off the battlefield. Spotting a break in lines the DA librarian and accompanying Ravenwing Command squad revved their engines and turbo-boosted across the battlefield and behind some ruins on the left flank.
After seeing the smoldering wreck of the accompanying punisher, Knight Commander Pask ordered a full reverse on his command tank allowing his gunners to target the sternguard in the imperial lines.
My shooting phase saw the junior officer bark at the blob squad to level their lasguns at the sternguard and issued the order ‘first rank, second rank fire’ in a hail of bullets, 1 of the sternguard squads was eradicated, Pasks punisher targeted the other squad, but seeing their brothers perish before their eyes, the squad braced for impact the shots from the punisher cannon pinging off their power armour. As the ammunition barrel ran out, the squad stood up and realised that they had not lost 1 single member!
The vendetta manoeuvred into position bringing the thunderfire cannon into its sights, Once locked, the pilot fired all 3 twinlinked lascannons into its side armour blowing up the cannon and its techengineer.
Again IG Coteaz managed to cast invisibility onto the guardsmen in front of him whilst the DA libby managed to get the 4+ invul on his ravenwing squad.

brian surveying the scene

brian surveying the scene

Pete began by going for the jugular, Tiggy successfully conjuring ignores cover onto Brian however IG Coteaz countered and managed to deny the cast (got 3 6’s with 4 dice!)
Enraged at this, the centurion devastator unit targeted Pasks Punisher and fired everything into the armoured Hull, punctuating the armour and causing a catastrophic explosion within the reactor, killing the commander outright.
The remaining sternguard squad brought their firepower onto the manticore, managing to rock the tank resulting in the missile targeting system malfunctioning (fire snapshots only)
The tactical marines within Petes ruins fired upon the ravenwing command squad below them killing one of the bikers with a shot that managed to get through a chink in his armour.

centurions are hard as f*@k

centurions are hard as f*@k

The third turn saw the Valkyrie swoop in, following the same flight path as the vendetta, its precious cargo of stormtroopers awaiting the order to grav chute onto the battlefield. Both the vendetta and Valkyrie targeted the devastator centurions however the combined firepower of the lascannons and multiple rocket pods glanced their impressive armour or crashed into the front of the ruins, leaving them unscathed.
The squads of sniper scouts targeted Tigurius now that he was in the open and managed to get a direct hit on the legendary librarian however tiggys skilled battlefield prowess meant that the shot bounced off his protective forcefield, like many before it..
The ravenwing moved to intercept Brian, and in doing so managed to kill 3 of the tactical marines within the ruins, their plasma talon gun fire, melting the armour of the soldiers where they stood.
Finally the combined weight of 45 lasguns aimed at the assault centurions protecting tigurius and SM coteaz and following another order of ‘first rank, second rank’ fire managed to take 1 wound off one of the centurions.

ravenwing into the attack

ravenwing into the attack

Pete began by trying to cast invisibility onto his devastator centurions, successfully casting it using 5 dice however tiggy again took a wound after rolling 4 6’s!
After successfully killing both punishers and pask, the sternguard next turned their attention to the scouts within the ruins. The sternguard moved into the ruins and fired upon the scouts killing one of them. Suddenly with a whirl the stormbolter within the droppod roared into life and began spraying bullets into the scouts too, but due to their prone positions from the sternguard assault the bullets failed to make any mark.
The assault centurions plundered forward targeting the manticore managing to take another hull point from it as the grav weapon technology struck the side armour.

Turn 4 began with the Valkyrie splitting off from the vendetta, its pilot targeting the remaining troops within the ruin. Its rocket pods smashing into the side of the ruin, killing one of the troops hiding there.
Unable to fire at the centurions, the vendetta flew off the table ready for another approach the next turn. The amassed ranks of the guardsmen altered their target and killed 2 of the contesting sternguard from the objective allowing the scouts to reclaim it within the ruin.
The ravenwing moved up towards Brian ready to assault next turn.
During the conjuring of invisibility, coteaz was distracted by something happening within the ranks of the guardmen and failed to successfully conjure the power, leaving the guardsmen prone for the first time in the battle!

Seeing the opportunity that presented itself, both tigurius and SM coteaz began conjuring their powers muttering those secret phrases hoping to successfully cast their powers. Tigurius successfully cast invisibility on his devastaor centurions again as well as 4+ invul on his sternguard. SM Coteaz cast ignores cover onto Brian, but in doing so received 1 wound due to perils.
And then it began, due to the blessing received Brians targeting systems could now see the massed ranks of the imperial guardsmen and open fire with its battle cannon getting 14 hits but only killing 5, the assault centurions moved in for the kill slaying 5 guardsman as they trundled forward.
The landraider, so quiet in the background fired its missiles into the chimera, smashing through its side armour and wrecking the transport.
In seeing the devastation caused by Brian, the DA librarian and ravenwing command squad said a silent prayer to the emperor and the lion and roared towards the imposing behemoth, plasma talons firing and taking one hp from the haloed armour

The vendetta flew back onto the table and also brought the knight into its sights, however the lascannon shots were absorbed by the ion shield that the knight threw up to protect itself. The Valkyrie pilot swung his controls to the left and descended into hover mode, allowing the squad of stormtroopers to deploy behind the landraider and contest the objective being held. Once out of the Valkyrie they fired their melta guns into the landraider, however the armour of the vehicle proved stubborn only allowing 1 hp to be removed.
The scout squad again targeted the centurions aiming at the sgt however again the shot bounced off his armour as he moved forward with his squad.
Due to the Valkyrie being in hover mode, the multimelta on the landraider swung around and targeted the hovering flyer. However the large amount of dust generated by the engines proximity to the ground, proved sufficient for the multimetla shot to miss.

caption id=”attachment_246″ align=”alignnone” width=”300″]melt his ass melt his ass[/caption]

The advancing assault centurions again levelled their grav weapons at the blob squad killing 4 of the guardsman as they bore down upon them.
With the ravenwing swarming around him, Brian raised up his gigantic foot and proceeded to stomp down, attempting to crush the dark angels under the force of his massive frame, 3 stomp attacks saw Brian claim the life of one of the ravenwing however the other attacks as well as his hammer of wrath attack could not finish the squad off ( mainly down to pete rolling three 1’s!!!)

With this being the final turn I attempted to consolidate onto the objectives in the hope that I claimed the 3 highest pointed ones. The Ravenwing managed to hit and run out of combat with Brain and sped toward the objective in Petes backfield where they killed the remaining tact squad member who had been holding it with ease. The remaining guardsman shuffled onto the objective in my deployment zone preparing for one final assault, where they were willing to lay down their lives for the emperor in the hopes of securing it. Also in the ruins the scouts moved forward and surrounded the objective in the ruins. The final objective that the imperial guard wanted to secure was the one that was hidden under the landraiders massive bulk. Receiving co-ordinated targeting information from commanders on the ground, the vendetta, Valkyrie and veteran squad threw everything that they had at the landraider in an attempt to destroy the landraider so that the veterans could claim the objective, however the emperor, watching over 2 of his own armies, must of favoured his marines that day, as despite 2 melta round, 1 plasma round, 3 twin linked lascannon shots from the vendetta, 1 lascannon shot and 2 multiple rocket pods from the valkyrie, the landraider remained!!! Only losing 1 hp!
Again IG coteaz failed to conjure invisibility onto the blob squad so it came down to petes last turn!

And finally petes last turn came, his assault centurions now holding back from the charge on the blob squad but again raining down grav shells upon the lines of the imperial guard. The centurions threw down 7 wounds upon the guardsmen and would you believe it, 6 of them made their 5+ saves!! Brian fired down his battle cannon onto the ravenwing on the objective and managed to kill one them and that was the final act of the game. The battlefield lay silent and we totalled up the points
I had managed to secure the 4 point objective as well as a 2 point one, whilst pete held a 3 point objective, a 2 pointer and a 1 pointer meaning we were equal on objectives!! However Pete also got first blood, kill the warlord and line breaker giving him a 9 to 6 win, soooooooooo close!

This was an amazing game that really showed the differences that had arisen with 7th edition. I must say I love invisibility!!!! Granted its broken, but it kept my blob alive longer than it should of and the only reason I lost guardsmen was because coteaz failed his psychic phase. I can see invisibility being comped out at tournaments due to the fact it could really affect a certain unit and make it unkillable but there is always a chance that the power will be prevented from being cast as we experienced here.
This brings me onto the psychic phase which I thought was great, yes you can get the best abilities in the game however there is no certainty that you will be able to get them off! No longer can someone now cast an ability and expect it to pass, as you have the increased worry of the perils table (which pete had to check three times!!) and also you have your opponent rolling to prevent the ability from succeeding! So it really is now in the hands of the dice gods.
My first time playing pete and I must say had a great time, again pete pointed out areas where I could look to exploit his list and showed me pointers with what I could do with my army so thanks Pete!
Me and pete ended our game roughly around half midnight with Nigel vs Ade (elder vs tau) in the final throws of their game and Lukan vs Liam (Chaos Daemons vs Blood Angels) just starting!
Yes friends Lukan had decided to bring along an unbound army and at 1am they had just got into turn 3!!! If you head over to Lukans blog, childrenofthewarp.blogspot.co.uk. he might tell you something about it!

caption id=”attachment_248″ align=”alignnone” width=”300″]1.15am and only turn 3 1.15am and only turn 3[/caption]

since writing this post I have played a further 2 games of 7th, an unplanned, revenge game against pete again and my first doubles game where I allied with Nathan (@ninjanath) and his crimson fists vs Lukan (@roguepsyker) and ade (@artfuldodgeruk) and their CSM and Tau alliance so hopefully those reports will be going up real soon

But for now friends

Hey guys and welcome back to another post about my continuation into warhammer 40k.

First off I would like to state that I am now totally hobby focused, as for the first time since I came back to the hobby I have finished my university year and all exams, woohoo!

And what a time to become focused as well, rumours are circulating regarding a 6.5 or 7th edition (depending on who you want to believe), on the horizon that will look to change the game as we know it. It has been confirmed in the latest white dwarf edition that the game will be based around battle-forged armies, (armies that maintain the FOC) and unbound armies (basically a free for all on what you can take).

Personally, I am looking forward to the changes, I am lucky in the fact that I have got into the game recently so I am just learning the rules as they stand now, so it shouldn’t be a massive uphaul for me, but I can see other people’s concerns as well.

Most of the concerns I have noticed, especially on twitter are in relation to unbound armies. As mentioned earlier unbound armies are armies consisting of whatever the player wants to field, the only limiting factor it seems, is the points value of the army itself. examples of unbound armies I have noticed include tau with 10 riptides, space marines with 14 stormtalons and 2 stormravens, 10 winged hive tyrants or an army full of leman russ battle tanks with pask leading the charge!

Now these are scary prospects to any player and will benefit those powergamers and those who wish to exploit the new rules. in my opinion, i believe tournaments will just refuse to allow unbound armies and will keep the current setup by only allowing FOC armies.

i think Unbound armies will be used predominately at club games as long as it has been agreed before hand by the participants. Speaking with Pete who currently hosts our WS10gaming nights, he also agreed that unbound armies will be allowed at gaming nights once the new edition drops as long as it has been agreed to before hand and the lists have been submitted a couple of days before hand, (better start stock piling those leman russes and a couple of knight titans!!)

Taking about gaming nights, this brings me nicely on to the game i played on Friday night vs Nick (@slanneshfiend) and his chaos space marine list with crimson slaughter allies.

Nick and i got talking before the game and it transpires that he decided to bring his forthcoming tournament list, which was nice of him!

Nicks list was as follows:
– 2x chaos sorcerors
– obliterator squad
– 2x squads of noise marines
– 2x squads of havocs
– 10 possessed
– 5 spawn
– 20 cultists
– 2x helldrakes
– aegis defence line

Now if you guys have read my previous posts, you will know that i have done horribly against psychic heavy armies due to the fact that i have never taken a psychic of my own, well answering the distress call of the imperium this time, Lord Torquemeda Coteaz joined the ranks of the allied army.

So my list was :
– Pask in exterminator
-leman russ battletank
-Yarrick
-Platoon command squad
-4 units of infantry squads w/lascannon & autocannon
-veteran squad w/melta, melta, plasma
-chimera transport
-priest
-2 x vendettas
-scout sentinel w/autocannon
-azrael
-5 scout snipers
-coteaz

The game we played was scouring and i managed to get first deployment and first turn, or so i thought! Nick managed to roll a 6 to seize, however i got Nick to re-roll due to coteaz’s ability. Nick agreed and managed to roll another 6! Heresy!

So Nick now had first turn,

Nick called forth the powers of the warp and was blessed with perfect timing and prescience from the divination tree, and invisibility and psychic shriek from the telepathy tree, whilst his warlord gained conqueror of cities.

coteaz prayed to the emperor and gained misfortune and prescience, whilst Pask took his standard warlord trait of old grudges.

armoured battalion

armoured battalion

Nicks possessed marines writhed in agony as the game began and as creatures from the warp manifested themselves and took over the marines bodies, they moved up his left flank and towards my tanks. Fortunately the gods of chaos could not bless these foul beasts anymore and Nick was unable to cast invisibility on them.

The crimson slaughter havocs situated behind the aegis defense line, levelled their autocannons and aimed at the heavy weapons squad which had taken up position in a ruin on my left flank. Blessed by the chaos gods with ignore cover and prescience, the autocannons struck home destroying the ruin and burying the heavy weapons squad under brick and blocks.

They wont see us here

They wont see us here

The low orbiting sun glinted off a sniper rifle scope from the scouts hidden in a building to the centre of my deployment and suddenly their position was compromised. This was all it required for the second unit of havocs to target them and kill 3 of their number.

the forces of chaos

the forces of chaos

seeing the carnage in the allied lines, the obliterators lumbered forward, the hideous fusion of flesh and metal took aim and removed a hull point from the exterminator tank whilst other shots pinged off the reinforced hull.

Amongst the bangs and explosions on the battlefield, music suddenly filled the air, as the two remaining scouts moved from their cover, sonic blasters from the noise marines crashed into the building killing another scout.

strike up the band

strike up the band

Seeing the terror in front of them the 40man infantry squad stood strong in the shadow of Commissar Yarrick, His power klaw pointing towards the tanks and advancing spawn. Yarrick barked orders to his men and blessed by Coteaz with prescience the blob squad opened up with 98 shots of lasgun fire. Unfortunately the warp ravished flesh of the spawn proved too strong for the majority of lasgun fire with only 17shots finding their way through the thick skin killing 4 of the hellish creatures.

Fear the blob

Fear the blob

Knight commander pask looked through the scope on the exterminator tank and observed the scene in front of him, after a quick radio conversation with the gunner of the battle tank, the exterminator autocannon swiveled around and fired its shells towards the noise marines, however they had been blessed by the chaos gods and managed to roll their saves and laugh as the shells failed to do damage. The battle cannon had better luck though and managed to take a wound off an advancing spawn.

Nick summoned forth a helldrake from his reserves along with 2 squads of cultists, luckily his second helldrake could not make it through from the warp this turn and so stayed in reserve.

The helldrake that did make it through was blessed with ignore cover and prescience by the chaos sorcerer as it swooped overhead and flew towards the lines of the guardsman. The possessed marines on nicks left flank again twisted into beasts and moved forward, with each stride, getting ever closer to the battle tanks positioned on the ridge. The obliterators also moved forward following in the shadow of the possessed marines. The obliterators fired off blasts of plasma fire towards the leman russ battle tank however the plasma blasts fell short of their intended target and began burning the ground,

The helldrake screamed over the heads of the guardsman below and shot out a torrent of fire from its baleflamer, the flames engulfing 5 guardsman and killing them outright, whilst the monsterous creature from hell swooped overhead the havocs fired their autocannons again killing another 5 guardsman within the blob squad. 8 guardsman were saved as azrael moved forward and shielded them with his gigantic frame, the bullets richoeting off his armour. Unfortunately due to the torrent of fire the squad was taking it became pinned and as a result could not move or do anything next turn

the helldrake swoops

the helldrake swoops

The possessed marines finally reached their target and with a swipe of their claws, ripped apart the hull of the battle tank causing catastrophic explosion killing all its crew.

give me a hug

give me a hug

A crackle of the radio and the 2 imperial vendettas swooped out of orbit and entered the battlefield, looking to gain air superiority and reinforce the line of the guardsman, unfortunately the quad gun of the aegis line locked targets with the lead vendetta and fired skyward. The vendetta jinked as explosions filled the sky however two shots hit the vendetta and it plummeted from the sky.

we need air support

we need air support

After seeing the battle tank being clawed to pieces by the possessed, Pask immediately ordered the exterminators weaponry to let rip at the advancing spawn, the hail of shells killed 1 spawn outright and put 5 other wounds on the other 2

Finally on Nicks third turn, his second helldrake broke free of the warp and swooped towards its brother. en-route it vector stiked the remaining vendetta but did not damage it, the pilot quickly turning out of damage. The other helldrake continued to baleflame the pinned infantry squad killing a further 5 guardsman, the priest and putting 2 wounds onto commissar yarrick as he attempted to shield his unit. On nicks left flank the 2 surviving spawn quickly moved towards commander pask. The quad gun on the aegis line locked velocity on the remaining vendetta lining up its sights for the next firing turn.

sensing blood, the havocs continued to fire upon the remains of the infantry squad with their ignore cover and prescience killing a further 3 guardsman and also Yarrick! however upon seeing their commissar fall, the infantry squad remained strong and stood their ground. The noise marines fired upon the chimera with their sonic blasters causing 2 penetrating hits, the sonic waves distorting the hull causing it to contract and expand and ripping it apart. Luckily the veteran squad inside bailed out just in time however they bailed out towards the advancing possessed. As the possessed charged the veterans, the vets fired their weapons on overwatch killing them with a combination of lasgun, plasma and melta shots.

ouch

ouch

vets to the rescue

vets to the rescue

The remaining spawn assaulted Pask and the exterminator tank, again the wide thrashing of claws shredded the armour of the leman russ, causing two penetrating hits resulting in the leman russ being blown apart and knight commander pask to be killed in the resulting fireball.

this wont end well

this wont end well

The vector locked vendetta swooped through the clouds and turned to fire upon the obliterators. As they came centered in his sights, the pilot squeezed the trigger and emptied the three lascannon barrels into the hellish monstrosities, sending them back to hell. The veterans consolidated after killing the possessed marines and moved towards cover. In the back field the remaining infantry squad that was pinned stood back up after being coerced by Azrael, the reserve bionics within commissar yarricks body attempted to shock his heart back into life but the eternal warrior cybernetics failed and yarrick passed from this mortal realm.

Nicks remaining spawn, spurred on by destroying the leman russ ran towards the veterans where they annilhated them on the charge with only the loss of one of them via overwatch. The quad gun on the aegis defence line finally managed to lock targets with the remaining vendetta and fired its shells into the side of the flyer splitting it into two as it fell from the sky.

kill kill

kill kill

With only coteaz, the scout sentinel and a handful of guardsman left, Azrael marched forward towards the spawn. Coteaz again blessed that last survivors with prescience and under a hail of bullets from the survivors and the sentinel, the remaining spawn were killed.

upon seeing the deaths of the spawn, one helldrake flew into a rage and vector striked the scout sentinel smashing through the armour with its claws. Sensing victory Nick piled all his firepower into the remaining group of guardsman and azrael and despite successfully passing 6 look out sirs and subsequent 4+ invul saves, the overwhelming hail of bullets cut down the grand master and the guardsman where they stood. leaving Coteaz as the lone survivor of the massacre at Wednesbury.

snake eyes

snake eyes summed up my night

So following Nicks ‘flawless victory’ i now currently stand at 0W, 0D 5L, however despite the loss i again have learnt alot more about my army and some tips that i could use in future games. Nick was a great opponent and even advised me on things that i could do during my turn, even if it meant him losing a model or unit.

I feel that where i probably made my first mistake was moving the blob towards nicks spawn as it ran towards my tanks on my right flank. This effectively bunched up my forces into a corner of the board, meaning that Nick could concentrate his firepower on that flank. Another area i will probably change for my next game would be to take some artillery, as apart from my tanks i had no real long range threat, especially as i lost my heavy weapons squad first turn.

A manticore, wyverns and thudd guns could of potentially caused havoc in his ranks that lined up behind the aegis which would of allowed some of my forces to move up the field slightly easier.

but these are for another game

May the emperor protect

Welcome back guys to my blog on my continuation into the world of 40k

Now In all my excitement and eagerness to blog about #WS10gamings visit to WHW to play the big boys, I totally forgot to post about my game 3 versus Nathan and his Crimson fists.

Slaps wrists for being a naughty boy.

Now before I delve into the game 3 report I must admit that I forgot to take pictures and notes. Yes yes I know, schoolboy error, but you’ll be glad to know that I have now got a dedicated 40k note book, (Woohoo) that I have used since, to record my game 4 which can be read in the previous post and will be used to record my activities in 40k from herewith

Coming back to my game 3, and due to heading to Pete’s straight from work on the previous occasion I have met up with the #WS10gaming lads, I have managed to arrive early and have been able to watch the games between Nathan and Adam that have been going on.

What I have learnt from watching the games is that Nathan has a few forgeworld units within his crimson fists force and pride of place is this force sits his Fireraptor. The prospect of facing this behemoth of the skies had me more nervous than a turkey at Christmas time

On the day in question, again I arrived early at Petes and managed to take in a couple of rounds of Adam and Nathans game.

The lads informed me that they were nearing completion of their game as they were in turn 4 so I began to secretly assess what Nathan was doing with some of his units so that I could possibly pre-empt some of his moves that he could do in our game.

So there I stood watching and observing as the lads went into turn 5, and then into turn 6 and then into turn 7! By this time all the other #WS10 lads had arrived and had started their matchups!

If you read Adam and Nathans blogs (geekphotoguy.blogspot.co.uk) & (freddielong87.wordpress.com) respectively, you can see how the game went from each of their perspectives. For those of you who do not like spoilers please scroll down now to avoid the winners name being mentioned

Drum roll please…………….Nathan Long

So Adam cleared away his miniatures and I began to set up mine. Again I seemed to lack any LoS blocking terrain anywhere near my side of the board, I must buy a defense line or bastion or fortress of redemption to combat that!

Anyway fresh from his victory over Adam, Whoops sorry guys! Nathan was full of confidence heading into our 1500 points game. Below is his list:-

  • Librarian in terminator armour / w terminator squad
  • 10 man assault squad w/ drop pod
  • 10 man tactical squad
  • rhino
  • Typhoon landspeeder
  • Predator tank
  • Vindicator tank
  • Fireraptor

And facing the space legion stood

  • Company command squad w/ creed, astropath, master of ordinance and officer of the fleet
  • Platoon command squad
  • 2x infantry squads
  • Leman russ exterminator
  • Vendetta
  • Dark Angels librarian lvl 2 psyker on a bike
  • Ravenwing command squad with ravenwing company banner and apothecary

At the start of this game Nathan rolled on the battlefield scenario lists and managed to select crusade with dawn of war (3 objectives). 1 of the objectives was placed in Nathans deployment zone, 1 in mine and 1 in the middle of the board

I managed to get first roll but Nathan managed to steal and go first instead!

Nathans first move of his turn was to deploy his drop pod near my company command squad, Nathan informed me that I had nothing to worry about as every time he has deployed his drop pod first, it has scattered a million miles off course and mostly ended up being destroyed off the board.

Yes you’ve guessed it #warmongers, Nathan rolled his dice and with the roar of the turbo thrusters, the drop pod came to land smack bang in front of the company command squad! Nathans face lit up, like a kid at Christmas whose just found out that santa has left him a stocking full of forgeworld goodies at the end of his bed, and with the thud of the pod doors hitting the ground all of Nathans assault squad deployed out from the pod and levelled their weaponry at Lord Creed and the rest of the command squad awaiting orders to fire.

Meanwhile on Nathans left flank, the vindicators treads squealed under the weight of the tank as it moved forward and lined up its demolisher cannon to the heavy weapons squad on my right flank.

After receiving orders from its commander, the assault squad began the shooting phase by decimating the company command squad, In all honesty they never stood a chance against the combined firepower that the assault squad dished out and (in my best Tommy cooper voice) “just like that” the imperial guard force lost all access to orders and leadership.

The horror did not stop there though as the vindicators demolisher cannon was cranked skyward and with a shout of “FIRE!” and another successful hit with the scatter dice, the heavy weapons squad joined its commanders in the afterlife (well side of the table)

Now began my retaliation! My ravenwing command squad and Librarian began by revving their bikes and screeching down my right flank toward the vindicator tank hoping to get close enough for the on board teleporter to be activated next turn (should they still be alive) and for the deathwing terminators to enter the arena. Whilst speeding up to the vindicator the ravenwing and librarian managed to knock off a hull point from the vindicator with a combination of bombs and plasma talon fire but apart from that their firepower didn’t even dent the surface.

After seeing their commander fall, the platoon command squad and associated platoon turned about and levelled their lasguns at the assault squad, with the platoon commander barking out orders the platoon managed to avenge the company command squad slightly by sending a few marines to their deaths, however most lasgun shots just pinged off the assaults squads power armour.

The smell of diesel filled the battlefield as the leman russ exterminators engines fired up and its twinlinked autocannon turret swung round to target the rest of the assault squad. With the squad set firmly in the gunners optics, the autocannons fired upon the squad however the diesel smoke from the engines obviusoly covered the gunners vision at the most inopportune time as the autocannon shots failed to do anything to the assault squad! My chimera also failed to kill any of the assault squad from its multi laser.

Spurred on by their miraculous saves from the autocannon, Nathans squad proceeded to annihilate the remainder of the platoon and platoon command on his next turn, their plasma guns and bolt pistols being no match for the guardsmens flak armour. Next to come shooting out of the sky like a meteorite were Nathans terminator squad. However the brave sacrifice of the guardsman for the emperor, must have been greatly received, as Nathans terminator squad misshaped and was subsequently destroyed! Praise to the emperor!

Not to be down heartened, Nathan brought on his typhoon landspeeder and jetted it towards the leman russ on my left flank. On its way the speeder fired its typhoon missile launchers into the chimeras hull, penetrating the vehicle, causing it to explode. Nathans other tank, the predator, rolled around his backfield and behind some cover of a house. The crank of an iron door being opened on his rhino saw Nathans tactical squad bail out on his left flank and proceed to unleash hell into my ravenwing squad, however the ravenwings years of life in the saddle and expertise on the battlefield saw the majority of them jink through the hail of bullets losing only 1 of their brothers.

Now in position, The ravenwing teleporter was activated and the blip of the beacon saw the arrival of the Dark Angels first company, the deathwing terminators! The giant hulks of the terminators moved through smoke that had borne their arrival to the battlefield and proceeded to assault the vindicator with their power and chainfists, which saw the vindicator wrecked and removed from battle.

At the same time the skies where filled with the screech of jet engines as the shadow of my vendetta entered the battlefield and moved across the board. Unfortunately its ominous arrival could not help it to do any damage and Nathans force was spared any more casualties.

The sun (or garage lights) were blocked out as Nathans Fireraptor had finally received the orders to enter the battle with its target assigned as the vendetta, firepower resonated throughout the skies above, with shell casings falling to the ground however from all the firepower the fireraptor had, only one shot managed to get through the vendettas armour and succeeded in taking 1 hp from it.

Nathans tactical squad began to foot slog around the back of the predator tank and march towards the objective whilst the this happened they managed to kill the ravenwing command squad in a crossfire, leaving only the librarian alive.

The librarian managed to ride across to the deathwing squad where they surrounded him protecting him from anymore fire and then proceeded to march towards the tactical squad and rhino looking to exact revenge for their fallen comrades. After a number of rounds of brutal hand to hand fighting, the deathwing emerged victorious on my right flank and consolidated at an objective.

Meanwhile the Leman Russ exterminator managed to destroy the landspeeder by firing a couple of autocannon shells into the side of the speeder killing its pilot causing it to slam into the ground and explode.

On seeing the smoke of the wrecked landspeeder, Nathans predator tank trundled into action and levelled its autocannon turret at the leman russ. As the autocannon shell screamed across the field and into the side of the tank, it penetrated its thick armour and caused a catastrophic explosion in the tank, destroying it and killing all on board. With no other threat to the 3 pointer objective, Nathans troops managed to reach it on the final turn and with that managed to score a 6-4 victory.

Again I had an amazing game with a great opponent and learned more about my army. Like protecting the company command squad! My secret attachment of Dark angels really surprised Nathan and caused a lot of damage to him on his left flank, however with the untimely loss of the leman russ exterminator that was protecting the left sided objective, Nathan stood unopposed to capture it and the game.

I Hope you guys have had fun reading about the game and hope you will come back to my next post in which ill talk about what I have been getting up to hobby wise with my new Astra Militarium codex in mind so stay tuned!

Extra, extra! Read all about it, WS10gamings journey to WHW!

Hello sir, interested in ws10gamings day at WHW? Of course you are!

On Sunday 6th April, the ws10gaming team descended upon WHW to take part in an inter-club tournament organised by Gaz Donelly and his club the Dudley Boys.

obligatory WHW photo opp

obligatory WHW photo opp

For those of you unsure what the inter-club tournament consists of, basically it involves a number of clubs within the midlands area, each putting forward players to play each other in ETC format games.

After meeting in the car park, Pete handed out our ‘team colours’ which are our new ws10gaming polo shirts. This one is mine below.

team colours

team colours

The main logo on the front was designed by @trujjison and I think you’ll all agree, it looks the bollocks.

On the back of our shirts were our nicknames, which defined our link with the armies we play. Pete gave us strict instructions that they had to be below 11 characters so I racked my brains trying to think of a cool one, to show my link to the IG. #coloursgt, #gunnarysgt, #capt, #creed.

In the end I came up with 2 I really liked, #emperorssledgehammer or #listenupmaggots. Now unfortunately both exceeded the character limit but eventually I went with ….drum roll please!

Yes you guessed it, I went with this one. It also allows for some subliminal advertising of the blog!

Listenupmaggots

Listenupmaggots

Now that Sunday was my first ever visit to WHW and I must say I was impressed. Some of the boards inside the gaming hall were very impressive. Whether it be the Goblin town based upon said town from the hobbit film to the humongous city board complete with chapel at one end.

Goblin Town

Goblin Town

Now the idea of the day was for Pete (@petehumpage), Adam (@geekphotoguy), Nigel (@nigelsbartlett), Nathan (@ninjanathUK), Graham (@wilsonsgraham), Daryll (@badsausagedjs) Nick (@slanneshfiend) & Ade whose not on twitter, to play a couple of games against players from Stafford Powerfisters, Dudley Boys and battlebrothers , whilst the rest of us including Mark (@79Sponge), Lukan (@RoguePsyker), Liam whose not on twitter but is Petes son and myself took in the games and played pick-up games versus any body that had no-one to play against.

Also attending was my brother Andrew and his mate James who have recently got back into 40k (the same brother who got me back into it) and had come along to watch the games and pick up tips and ideas for their forces that they have begun collecting.

Now the day didn’t start exactly to plan as nigel unfortunately had a family emergency which meant that he couldn’t come, I think you’ll all agree that family comes first but all of a sudden we were down on 1 of our most experienced players.

Luckily we had a number of players who had come along to watch the games and hopefully pick up a few ‘pick up’ games or have a game vs each other.

standing guard

standing guard

Pete, Adam and Nick ended up playing against a couple of guys from the opposing teams whilst the rest of us, decided to get games in versus each other.

I ended up having a game against Lukan and his Chaos Deamons, who had beaten me in my very first game, so I looked to get revenge on him and pick up my first W

Even though I had brought a 1500 points list, Lukan had an 1850 list so I managed to scrap a few other models together from Pete and played 1850

Now ive come to learn that Lukan echoes his army in such that he just wants to kill and smash things up on the game board and hence for the second time we didn’t play objectives but more of just kill things in battle.

My list was as follows :-

  • Company command squad w/ Creed, Astropath, Master of Ordinance and Officer of the Fleet
  • Chimera transport
  • Platoon command squad w/ missile launcher
  • Infantry squad w/ Autocannon
  • Infantry squad w/ Autocannon
  • Storm trooper Squad w/ flamer and melta gun
  • Storm trooper squad
  • Vendetta
  • Vendetta
  • Vendetta
  • Leman Russ Battletank
  • Leman Russ Exterminator
  • Manticore
  • Scout Sentinel

Lukans list was :-

  • Great Unclean One, Lvl 1 Psyker w/ exalted Reward
  • Herald of Tzeentch, Lvl 3 Pysker Locus of Consuration
  • Herald of Slannesh, Lvl 1 Psyker w/ greater reward
  • Herald of Nurgle, Lvl 1 Psyker w/ exalted reward and locus of fecundity
  • 10 x demonettes
  • 10 x horrors
  • 10 x plaguebringers
  • 3 x flamers
  • skull cannon
  • soul grinder (deamon of nurgle) w/ warp gaze

Allies

  • deamon prince (deamon of nurgle) w/ wings & burning brand of skalanthrax
  • 5 x thousand sons w/ icon of flame
  • 5 x chaos space marines w/ plasma gun
  • heldrake

Now somehow I had managed to find myself on the only board at WHW that seemed to be sparse in blocking terrain! Not good when u have a load of infantry floot slogging across the board, whilst Lukan had a couple of ruins that he had commandeered off other boards that he had deployed around and behind! Hmm sneaky!

chaos deployment

chaos deployment

I managed to get a small building and deployed my heavy weapons teams on top of the roof of the building with the rest of the squad behind the building out of line of sight

allied hangout

allied hangout

My Manticore was deployed in my back field on my right flank with both my leman russes in front of it protecting it from fire. My chimera with CCS had been deployed slightly behind the ruined building whilst the 3 vendettas, sentinel and 2 lots of stormtroopers were kept off the board in reserve.

I managed to win the roll off for first turn and off I went. ForTheEmperor!

On my first turn I moved my two russes up the right flank and then left the remainder of my force in cover behind the building

My first shooting phase began with me firing a missile from the manticore towards a large group horrors that lukan had put together towards his backfield. Now take a second to imagine his surprise when the blast hit smack bang in the middle of them! Out of the 10 that were there, only 3 survived. Good start!

dead chaos

dead chaos

My battletank then opened up on the remaining 3 horrors looking to wipe them out but the tank missed its target. The exterminator tank then fired at the group of thousand sons that were huddled on his left flank and managed to kill 3 of them from the combination of autocannon and heavy bolters.

The autocannon teams on top of the building, took aim at the skull cannon and managed to take 2 hull points whilst my final part of the shooting phase saw my MoO missing his mark with his ordinance barrage.

Lukan responded to losing a good proportion of horrors by rolling prescience from his psyker and then, maybe out of fear of the manticores destructive powers, began to move his troops into the ruined buildings.

At the start of his shooting phase, Lukan rolled on his psychic powers and got Warp Storm and Rot, Glorious Rot. With this he targeted the manticore, which he hit and destroyed! He also managed to remove a hull point from the chimera.

The thousand sons failed their psychic powers, however the 3 horrors passed theirs and they managed to kill the heavy weapons teams on the top of the building, whilst the skull cannon opened up on his right flank and managed a direct hit over 6 guardsman and the chimera which could just be seen behind the building. Luckily for me the chimera passed its save but the skull cannon killed 5 guardsman.

hmm im sure it was a lot busier up here earlier

hmm im sure it was a lot busier up here earlier

My second turn saw me bring on my 3 vendettas with 2 stormtrooper squads and my scout sentinel I also moved my tanks further up the right flank aiming to sweep round into his deployment zone behind his forces

reserves

reserves

A combination of bad dice throws and lucky saves saw the only action of my shooting phase culminate with a hit onto the skull cannon with the multi-laser of the chimera destroying it!

With the loss of his skull cannon Lukan called for reserves however due to my Astropath being on the board, he had to add +1 to his reserve rolls which saw him fail to bring everything on apart from his helldrake. GULP! The rest of his forces on the board remained hiding within the ruins trying to keep their cover saves and blocking meaning I would have to move to him

With the arrival of the helldrake, Lukan proceeded to vector strike one of my vendettas taking 1 HP from it. Again he got rot, glorious rot ( I forgot how many psychic abilities daemons got!) and managed to kill my astropath, meaning that he no longer had to add +1 to any more of his reserve rolls. He then rolled prescience on his herald and managed to kill the remaining advisors. Now I didn’t mind losing the Officer of the fleet as all my reserves were on but losing the Master of Ordinance was a bit of a blow.

battle for the skies

battle for the skies

Due to the vector strike from the helldrake, it now found itself in range of my guardsman which it proceeded to baleflame at the rear of the building, killing 3 and putting soulblaze on another, whilst his daemon prince with the burning brand missed my sentinel but killed another 4 guardsmen.

In response to the massacre happening in my deployment zone, i split my tanks into a pincer movement around the building where the thousand sons were hiding and managed to get my battle tank LoS to the back field of his deployment zone. I then moved my chimera and remaining troops from around the back of the building to the front and moved my vendettas to deal with the threat of the helldrake .

the pincer

the pincer

Even though they were with the ruins in lukans backfield, my leman russ exterminator was able to pick out a plasma gunner from the thousand sons unit through a window. And even though it was slightly overkill, the twin linked autocannon managed to kill the gunner resulting in that unit being left with just bolters

The vendettas then took aim at the helldrake and unloaded 9 lascannon shots into the beasts side. Needless to say after that amount of firepower, the helldrake plummeted to the ground, dead.

fly swatted

fly swatted

After seeing his helldrake being blown out of the sky and with my Astropath dead, Lukan brought on the remainder of his forces. These included his soulgrinder, plaguebearers, flamers, Great unclean one and deamonettes!

Lukan then deep striked the flamers into my deployment zone so that they could aim at the remaining guardsmen and chimera. Whilst his plaguebearers deep striked behind my leman russ tanks looking to attack them from behind.

bring the plague

bring the plague

Lukan informed me that his Great Unclean One had a portal glyph allowing it to summon extra forces from the warp.

Lukan used his warpstorm to kill the remaining infantry squad, whilst flamers that deep striked towards my deployment zone used a lash of despair and their flamers against the chimera but missed.

The great unclean one attempted to use life leech on the leman russ battle tank and succeeded in glancing 1 hp from it.

deja vu

deja vu

Lukan then targeted the vendettas with skyfire from his soulgrinder and warpgaze and managed to take 1 hp of 2 vendettas.

I want your souls

I want your souls

Again during my turn I continued to move my leman russes forward into lukans deployment zone and also moved my chimera and sentinel forward toward to middle of the table whilst the vendettas moved towards the soulgrinder so that they could get LoS onto it for the shooting phase

The vendettas opened up and again the destructive force of 9 lascannon shots managed to annilihate the soulgrinder removing the threat of skyfire. The leman russ exterminator and chimeras multi-laser shot at the Great Unclean One with the autocannon managing to remove 2 wounds from it whilst the multi-laser shot agonisingly wide.

My final part of the shooting phase saw the autocannon on the sentinel kill one plaguebearer

Lukan began his turn by moving his plaguebearers and great unclean one towards the leman russes but fell short of charge range. His deamon prince again then vector striked the vendetta which now had 1 hp after previous turns and managed to blow it from the sky. Unfortunately this was also a vendetta that had a stormtrooper squad inside and they were all killed as well as they all failed to bail out.

The phrase 2 birds, 1 stone anyone?

Lukans plaguebearers shot at the rear of my exterminator tank and scored a penetrating hit which managed to blow it up, whilst his great unclean one tried to life leech the battle tank but thankfully missed.

Things were not looking good for the forces of the imperium at this stage and the first thing I did was to throw my battle tank into reverse to get away from the great unclean one. I also moved my sentinel and chimera towards the pungent creature with the aim of throwing all weapons into it during the shooting phase hoping to wipe its stench from the board

Beep, Beep, Beep, reversing, reversing, reversing

Beep, Beep, Beep, reversing, reversing, reversing

Fed up with the vector striking daemon prince I moved my 2 remaining vendettas towards it, hoping to have the same effect as they had been having on other targets.

The vendettas opened up but unfortunately only managed to take 2 wounds from the daemon prince leaving him on 2 wounds and leaving him the ability to strike at the vendettas next turn!

My combined force of leman russ battle tank, sentinel and chimera shot at the great unclean one and did…….. nothing! Damn you dice gods!

This was not good as I knew this was potentially the last chance to kill the great unclean one before it smashed into my tank.

Lukan again started by vector striking his daemon prince but instead of targeting my vendettas, this time he went across my chimera. This maybe had something to do with the fact that my brother had returned from wandering around WHW and came back to see how I was getting on. The fact that he then proceeded to say ‘ah well at least you’ve still got your company command squad alive in the chimera’ and then the big grin on lukans face which followed it, meant that lukan then tried to wipe out my warlord! Thanks bro!

Luckily for me and for the first time in the game the vector strike failed and did nothing to the chimera, Phew!. He then brought on 5 bloodletters via the portal and moved them to back up his great unclean one

Following my brothers ill times outburst, Lukan began to focus all his attention to the chimera and began by shooting his flamers at it, luckily for me, they all missed, however his lash of despair from the herald managed to get a penetrating hit which resulted in the chimera being blown up and the company command squad all bailing out.

So their stood my CCS in the middle of the table staring down the advancing horde!

no-mans land

no-mans land

Now as u remember, I threw my battle tank into reverse during my movement phase to escape the great unclean one, however by doing this I managed to reverse into charge range of the plaguebringers. So as you can guess the plaguebringers charged the battle tank removing the final hps from it blowing it up and as it exploded the tank took 3 plaguebringers with it to their firey deaths.

Now I still had air superiority or so I thought as lukans flickering fire managed to kill a second vendetta and yes you’ve guessed it, it was the one with the other stormtrooper squad inside it. Again the result was similar to the first vendetta resulting in dead troopers.

The demonettes charged the ccs in the middle of the table and from overwatch I managed to kill 1 of them but the remaining force decimated the CCS via the charge.

That saw the end of Lukans turn and a roll of the dice to see if the game progressed saw it end. Meaning I had a scout sentinel and 1 vendetta left on the table and a win for the forces of chaos.

This game saw me move to 0W, 0D and 4L’s but neverless I had another amazing game and it being my first trip to WHW I had a fantastic day and experience.

I spent the rest of the time at WHW looking through the hall of minatures which had an amazing centrepiece of a tyrannid assault on the fang, the space wolves fortress, see below pictures

Although I lost, I really enjoyed my time and I am looking forward to another visit to WHW when it arrives. Again I learnt more about my army however this is to ultimately change as this was the last game with my Imperial Guard force as the next game I will be playing as Astra Militarum and the new codex but that my friends is for another post!

Post game note.

Whilst writing this post up I have remembered that I have forgotten to type up my game 3 vs Nathan and his Crimson Fists! That again my friends will be coming soon, so keep a look out.

May the Emperor Protect.

New Sightings and Game 2

Hey Guys and welcome back to my blog!

Now as you can imagine being an Imperial Guard player, it is an extremely exciting time for me at the moment.

I, like other guard players, are excited to see all the new shinies being rumoured to being released, (even though my wallet is not!) and some of the things that i have seen leaked on Facebook, Naftka and belloflostsouls has got me counting down the days.

Within last weeks (no.9) White Dwarf we were treated with pictures of the scions and Taurox which i spoke about a few posts ago, however ‘leaked’ pictures of the forthcoming white dwarf show that we will be getting a remake of the hydra tank which can also be constructed as a Wyvern. I must say the detail within the cockpit of this model is outstanding and its a shame my painting skills cannot bring it to justice.

New Wyvern

Other ‘releases’ that have drawn my attention are the Order cards, which if you read my post on my first game against Lukan, would of helped to reminder me to utilise orders! Whilst a rumour of a Tank Commander HQ with personal orders is also interesting me, Potentially opening up the possibility of an armoured force being taken into a game.

New Orders

New Orders

Now i can hear some of you shouting, “Get on with it, we want to know how you got on with your 2nd game”, so for you guys I will now fill you in!

My second game was a 1500 points game against @79Sponge (Mark) and his force of Chaos Space Marines. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough models to play 1500 points so Pete kindly lent me his Valkyrie, manticore and Leman Russ battle tank and i had left a few models off the board against Lukan which i now brought on.

Marks list was as follows :

  • Nurgle Demon Prince with wings, black mace Lvl 3 psyker
  • 5x chaos marines in rhino with dirge casters
  • 5x chaos marines in rhino with dirge casters
  • 5x terminators and 5x plague marines within a landraider
  • 2x obliterator
  • 2x chaos spawn

Everything that could have, had a mark of Nurgle

My list was as follows

  • Company Command Squad with Astropath, Master of Ordinance and Officer of the fleet (CCS)
  • Platoon Command Squad with Platoon Standard (PCS)
  • 10man infantry squad
  • 5 man Stormtrooper squad
  • Heavy Weapons Squad (2x autocannon and lascannon)
  • Chimera transport
  • Leman Russ Exterminator
  • Leman Russ Battle Tank
  • Manticore
  • Vendetta

Now, unfortunately i forgot to take pictures of the game. I know, I know, you guys like to see pics so ive decided to ‘borrow’ a pic of marks daemon prince and landraider from his twitter as they are epic! I also want to apologise as I also forgot to take notes and i am now attempting to remember what happened 3/4 weeks ago when with a 31 year old brain I can hardly remember what I had for tea last night! Obviously the mrs’ cooking is that good!

Now before the game, Mark who had been watching my game with Lukan advised me on certain things I could do to put my forces in cover and how to deploy better, seeing as i left the majority of things out in the open against Lukan, therefore i ended up deploying my heavy weapons squad on different levels of a 3 story ruin and put my platoon command squad and infantry on the ground floor of the same ruin. I positioned both leman russes behind a fence line and the company command squad within the chimera.

I kept in reserve the Vendetta and storm troopers hoping that they would come on later and positively affect the game for me.

Mark had deployed his daemon prince with wings and put him in flight mode. His 2x rhinos and landraider were deployed on his right flank facing the ruin with all my infantry in and his obliterators and spawn were hiding in a ruin on his left flank.

Mark won the roll for first turn and began by charging his landraider and both rhinos towards the ruin that my infantry and heavy weapons squad was in, by doing this though all 3 vehicles had to pass over some difficult terrain which had been placed smack bang in the middle of the board. Now Mark mentioned that he could of gone round the terrain but couldn’t be bothered and so just put the pedal to the metal and blasted forward.

Unfortunately for Mark all 3 vehicles got stuck on the terrain, including one of the rhinos becoming immobilised after failing its difficult terrain test. This meant that all 3 vehicles were in the open and more importantly in my line of sight for my turn which was coming up!

After moving the vehicles, Mark swooped around and above my deployment zone with his daemon prince but didn’t do anything to my forces which were huddled below.

My first turn and I decided to leave the majority of my force where it was and get to the shooting phase as quick as possible!

My first shooting phase and I opened up with the manticore and managed to get a direct hit on the land raider  which resulted in it being immobilised on the terrain! Good start! (although this was the only thing the manticore did all game, Damn u scatter dice!) As a result Marks terminators and plague marines, all jumped out and had to foot slog to my deployment area.

My Leman russes fired at the other rhino that wasn’t immobilised and scored a hit on that destroying it in the process! Things were looking good.

Unfortunately all marks other forces were too far away for me to get any other shots in, so I ended my turn.

Marks second turn began by him moving his terminators and plague marines forward towards my ruin, trying to get into combat as quick as possible. His obliterators and spawn remained in their ruin in his deployment zone and with that Mark ended his movement phase.

Marks shooting phase didn’t start very well for him with him failing one of his powers on his daemon prince and getting grounded! Luckily for me he managed to miss anything in my deployment zone and also he lost a wound by crashing to the floor.

Mark opted to forgo a shooting phase with his terminators and plague marines by charging them closer to the ruin. Now Mark may not like me for letting out this secret, but what I didn’t realise was the dirge casters equipped with the terminators and plague marines meant that I could not use overwatch, meaning that his terminators and marines had now reached their target and where now within striking distance of my infantry! Sneaky!

On my second turn and with the help of my officer of the fleet, I now decided to bring on the Vendetta equipped with my storm troopers detachment. This gave me air superiority, due to no more flying daemon prince. I elected to move 18” along my deployment zone from the board edge allowing me to target his daemon prince with my 3x twin linked lascannons.

I also pivoted my heavy weapons squad around to target the daemon prince, as I wanted to try and get rid of him ASAP as I knew he was going to cause havoc within my infantry lines should he start flailing around his daemon weapon.

I moved my russes forward hoping to pincer the terminators and marines against the ruins walls and get them in a crossfire between my infantry and heavy support.

My second round of shooting initially started well as I managed to take a 2 more wounds from the daemon prince leaving him on 1 wound and easy pickings, or so I thought!

I managed to remember one of my orders and shouted out for he heavy weapons squad to ‘Bring it Down’. This meant that I had my heavy weapons squad (2x autocannon and 1 lascannon, twinlinked with order) my Valkyrie (3x twin-linked lascannons) my chimera (multi laser, heavy bolter and heavy stubber) and my infantry platoon combining roughly 15 men, all fire upon the daemon prince and his solitary wound. Now take a guess about what happened next?

Yes, well done that person at the back of the room, that successfully shouted out, that all that firepower did absolutely nothing! The dice gods had obviously chosen Mark that day, as my dice rolls were abysmal and those shots that managed to get through were successfully saved by Mark.

I also couldn’t do anything with my russes as by moving them forward, in what I thought would cement my crowning glory, I inadvertently lost line of sight to the daemon prince and only could make snap shots from the tanks!

Now it was Marks turn again and spurred on by his HQ laughing demonically (or was that Mark?) at the sight of all that ammunition failing to make a dent in the daemon prince, his terminators and plague marines, did what they do best and got up close and personal with my infantry and heavy weapons squad.

Needless to say after the assault and subsequent failed leadership test, Marks terminators and plague marines had free reign straight to my Chimera with my command squad in. The daemon prince had other ideas though and with a swing of his daemon weapon destroyed my chimera and all its occupants!

Now by moving my russes around the front of the ruin, I put them in light of sight of the immobilised rhino and landraider which subsequently destroyed the leman russ battle tank. Things had just taken a nose dive and it looked like I had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Mark ended his turn and allowed me to try and save the dire situation I had now found myself in.

Now remember I still had the Vendetta with its accompaniment of storm troopers! I put the Vendetta into hover mode and dropped off the storm troopers allowing them to assault the demon prince. I also moved my remaining russ around the ruin so as to fire upon the terminators from behind.

In my third shooting phase I assaulted the demon prince with my storm troopers and Vendetta and fired upon the terminators with my russ and yet again did absolutely nothing, yet again the daemon prince successfully saved all his saves ( I think he saved at least 10 or 11 saves on the night) and due to only having snap shots and terminator armour of 2+ save, the russ didn’t do anything either.

The final action of the game saw Mark move his terminators into my storm troopers, wiping them out during their assault phase, which saw us agree to end the game due to the time and also the minimal amount of units I had left!

All in all I had a great game against a great opponent who took time to help me out and give me advice in what I should do in certain situations, even if it meant that he would lose some units in the process.

The MVP of the game was definitely Marks daemon prince which just would not die! Even towards the end of the game, the other lads who had finished their games and were packing up, couldn’t believe that everything that I fired upon the prince was either saved or missed! Indeed the closest the daemon prince came to dying was when Mark nearly dropped him on the floor when packing him away!.

With the end of my game 2 also came the end of my first visit to meet the #ws10gaming guys at Petes house. I had a great time and learned a lot during each of my games. And even though I came away with the record of 0W, 0D, 2L I was looking forward to my next visit and next game against Nathan and his Crimson Fists, but that will come in another post!

So for now, all I’m left to say is

May The Emperor Protect!

I’m Back!

Hey guys and welcome back to my blog on my continuing journey back into 40k.

Now first of all I want to apologise about the downtime since my last post and now. Unfortunately real life had to take precedence as I had to complete my university assignments and undertake an exam to do with my job.

I’m glad to say that all those are now done and so I can concentrate back on the hobby! Woohoo.

Now since my last post, Pete (@petehumpage) has asked if I and some other guys from #ws10gaming would like to take part in some inter-club gaming sessions at WHW, and pit our might against some experienced tournament players.

At this present time, and with 3 games under my belt (game 2 and 3 will be coming soon), I feel I am pretty inexperienced with the game and hence I have politely declined to take part, however I will be in attendance on the day to support the other guys, gain some knowledge from the games taking part and also play a revenge game vs lukan and his chaos demons!!

He too said he was a little inexperienced but still wanted to go so we will lock horns once again and I hope to pick up my first W! Before that though I have alot of stuff to paint!!

Now during my downtime there has been more information released about the new IG and hopefully we get to see them in the flesh extremely soon.

Also during my downtime, Throne of Skulls tournament was held at WHW with a few of the #Ws10gaming group taking part. Nigel (@nigelsbartlett) and Nick (@slanneshfiend) joined alot of other warmongers over the 2 days in Nottingham and from reports, had a great time.

I believe this was one of the first tournaments that allowed the new imperial knights in as well as other ‘lords of war’ and again from reports, I believe there was differing degrees of success with them. @lemonpainting took 4 of them and ended the 2 days on 5 wins from 5, Won the knights best army and got into the best painted category so big congrats to him! Nigel also ended on 5 out of 5 with his eldar corsairs. He came joint first in the eldar army category but didn’t win because he did not name his units! However again massive congrats to him for his achievements. I believe the army that won overall was tyranids!

Anyhow I hope to bring you my game 2 and 3 versus mark and his chaos force and Nathan and his crimson fists very soon now that I’m back hobbying so until then….

May the emperor protect.

The rumour mill

Hey #warmongers and welcome back to my blog on my journey back into 40kNow if you have been reading my posts and notice the title of this blog, you will realise that I have begun to collect Imperial Guard.

Rumours and ‘sightings’ have began to circulate about new Imperial Guard models being released or Astra Militarum as they are possibly going to be called. Here is a pic of the possible new codex front cover

New Imperial Guard ?

New Imperial Guard ?

There has also been some leaks regarding new stormtrooper command squads called Militarum Tempestus / Scions. I think these look pretty sweet especially with the berets. These are rumoured to be a separate division to the new codex and will apparently get their own codex which will be online only

Militarum Tempestus

Other Pics have been leaked of new ogryns and their close quarter versions bullgryns

Im not really sold on the ogryns but I do like the bullgryn especially the one with the gas mask and look forward to hopefully new rules and points cost for these and see what they can do.

Bullgryn

The only thing I don’t really like that I have seen is the new vehicle, the Taurox

there is just something about it that doesn’t look quite right. I think its the tracks

As with every new release i’m sure that the majority of you #warmongers will visit  www.elementgames.co.uk (@elementgames) to get 20% on pre-orders and up to 20% on other warhammer 40k or fantasy models. If you havn’t visited elementgames.co.uk then why not?

This brings me round to another online store that provides hobby items. My younger brother, who if you read my first post, you will know got me back into 40k after reading his horus heresy books, has decided to re-embrace the hobby himself. After much thought he has decided to collect Dark Eldar.

Now this is good for me because it will give me some one to practise against when Im not at the #WS10gaming nights and will also hopefully enable me to get to learn the rules quicker, speaking to a few guys over twitter the downside that they have about the hobby is that they don’t have anyone to play against regularly.

I must say I struck it rich with the #WS10gaming crew

Anyway My brother decided to get his Dark Eldar army from totalwargamer, this was over 2 weeks ago and after dropping over £100 on models alone, is still waiting for it to be delivered!

I have since educated him on the benefits of elementgames and he assures me he will not make the same mistake again, plus that means extra crystals for me!

So all in all I have mixed feelings on the forthcoming weeks, on the plus side it means new imperial guard and new shinies but on the downside my wallet is going to take a hammering!

I will update you guys on my next two games from my meetings with the #WS10gaming guys soon but for now stay classy!
