Please do not adjust your screens my friends, you are not seeing things! I really have updated this blog with 3 posts in a week!
This latest report covers my latest battle, a doubles game in which I allied with Nathan (@ninjanath) against Ade (@artfuldodgeruk) and lukan (@roguepsyker)
The rules were quite simple, anything we liked as long as it was in the 1000 points limit for each person, so effectively 2k each team.
Now I for one have never faced off against tau before, and even though they have taken a recent beating with the new rules, I know that Ade plays them differently to anything that I have read or heard about via podcasts or tournament reports, so facing them would be a surprise and also a test.
In the case of lukan, I imagined that he would bring along 1k of Chaos deamons and then constantly spam summoning to effectively bring on more and more forces and overwhelm us.
After conversing with Nathan over twitter, we managed to come up with a combined list and some tactics that we believed would cover all bases and cause terror in the xenos lines.
Well after picking up Lukan and Graham on the night I discovered that Lukan had not brought any daemons with him and had play tested it the previous night at GW Birmingham! Inquisitively asking what list he had brought, I got told that I would find out soon enough on the battlefield, it wasn’t until I picked up graham who quickly blurted out about Lukans CSM’s, that I found out!!!
Upon arriving (slightly late I might add due to me having to babysit my son until the mrs came home), I discovered that Nathan who had been playing Ade in a 1850 points battle beforehand had lost to him. This didn’t bode well, as I was relying on Nathan to effectively lead our team whilst I mopped up smaller units or remnants of destroyed ones.
So on to the game, We rolled for mission and got emperors Will with Dawn of War set up. Emperors will is where each person lays down an objective marker in their own half and they count as 3 victory points to the player that controls them
Ade and Lukan won the roll for deployment and elected to go first as well. Along their deployment zone, ade placed his firewarriors within some ruins on the right of their deployment zone with some other firewarriors and shield drones on the far right behind some fence line. On the far left ade placed his hammerhead tank behind some fence line again supported by some more
Lukan deployed a unit of cultists next to Ades firewarriors behind the fence line. Whilst some regular chaos space marines joined the hammererhead. Behind some ruins on the left hand side of their deployment Lukan positioned a level 1 pysker as well as Abaddon and his unit of terminator bodyguards
For our deployment Nathan elected to keep the majority of his list off the board and I reserve only deploying his master of the forge behind some ruins in our deployment zone and also his relic scorpius whirlwind.
For my deployment i decided to put everything I had on the left flank of the table behind some ruins and effectively bubble wrap my wyvern . Both punishers were positioned at the front so that their front AV14 armour would absorb any shot taken at the wyvern. I positioned the chimeras behind the punishers and placed coteaz in the middle of all the tanks with my lvl 2 pysker in the ruins near the master of the forge.
Before Lukan and Ade began I attempted to seize the initiative with Coteaz but failed both times. So turn 1 began with Ade and Lukan firing upon the relic scorpius with the aid of 4 markerlights, This enabled the cover to be taken away whilst also increasing the BS of a chosen model. The model they chose was the hellbrute who levelled its lascannon and fired its shots into the scorpius’ armour, causing a penetrating hit, Lukan prayed to the dark gods for a 6 to make the scorpius explode and they must of been listening as he rolled that 6 meaning the scorpius was removed from the tabletop!!
Lukan attempted then to use tzeetch firestorm from his psyker however he managed to roll a double 1 meaning he had to check the perils chart where he discovered that the pysker lost a wound and also forgot a random spell for the entirety of the battle.
Ade began focusing on one of chimeras that was slightly positioned behind the other vehicles on the left flank and was in LoS to his hammerhead. With a massive crash the round shattered into the chimeras side armour, The force of the shot penetrated the chimeras armour and subsequently caused the vehicle to explode, forcing the 10man squad of Kasrkin to jump out.
The cluster of firewarriors around the hammerhead focused on the Master of the Forge which was hiding behind the ruins and brought his bulky frame into their sights. The majority of the shots crashed into the ruins and those that did find their mark were easily deflected away from the Master of the forge via his forcefield
The final act of the turn saw the chaos space marines also target the master of the forge, and unlike the firewarriors before them, their shots did find their mark, removing a wound from the master of the forge who staggered back behind better cover.
The Emperors finest now began their turn, with both punishers moving forward towards the fence line that protected the firewarriors and cultists. As they moved forward on the left flank, a thunderous roar was heard overhead on the right flank and the crimson fist droppod shot from the sky and came to rest behind the hammerhead. As the massive iron doors opened, a 10man marine squad charged out, meltaguns firing at the rear of the hammerhead. Unfortunately, the meltaguns failed to hit the hammerhead and it remained unscathed, Upon seeing the meltaguns miss, the marines armed with bolters opened fire on the tau tank, removing 1 HP when a shot glanced its new age armour.
On the left flank, coteaz who had advanced with the punishers and used the tanks as cover managed to imbue the psychic powers of invisibility and prescience on the 2 tanks. Once the spells had completed, the tanks ‘disappeared from sight’ to all those that stood against the imperium. Upon receiving the blessings, Knight commander Pask ordered the tanks to open fire upon the fenceline in front of him and the firewarrior squad that cowered behind. 20 shots, with another 20 rending and all with prescience, slammed into the xenos lines and even though 1 shield drone managed to take a couple of shots the remaining 28 shots that got through the defences and wiped the xenos filth from the battlefield.
The wyverns targeting systems locked onto the firewarrior squad within the ruins at the backfield, its mortar shells slamming into the building with unerring accuracy. Once the smoke cleared from the shells, it was found that 3 firewarriors had perished under the bombardment.
Turn 2 began with Abaddon and his terminator bodyguards moving towards to area in which the punisher tanks were last seen in. The hammerhead tank also moved moved and towards the same area, its targeting systems, scanning for any sign of the tanks but coming up short. The chaos psyker again attempted to cast its last remaining power, successfully casting the malediction power onto the space marines that has emerged from the droppod, however the successful power came at a huge cost as again the psyker perils and again he ended up taking a wound, meaning that Lukan and ade watched on as their only psyker dropped dead in front of them!!
The successful tzeetch firestorm took hold of the space marine unit and claimed the lives of 2 of them whilst the other marines successfully managed to avoid the brunt of the dark art.
Even though the Punishers were invisible the markerlights attempted to improve the situation by marking the probable tanks location by rolling a 6, it was a tall order, but one that they managed to achieve as 1 markerlight managed to ‘lock on’ to the punishers by rolling a 6! Fortunately when the markerlight attempted to engage the punishers, the lock was lost and the shot did not touch the punisher. Another 2 markerlights targeted the SM marines from the droppod and their benefits helped the firewarriors around the hammerhead, kill 2 of the marines with the remaining 2 marines dodging the shots which cut down their brothers. The hellbrute then targeted the remaining 2 space marines and fired its krak missiles as well as its lascannon into the marines in an attempt to destroy the unit, however the monstrosities firepower missed their marks as the 2 space marines managed to survive
The beginning of the alliance turn saw the emergence of the Fire-raptor and another droppod, The droppod coming into land next to the other droppod, again the 10man marine squad jumped out firing all weapons at the hammerhead. Unfortunately all the bolter shots pinged off the armour however the heavy flamer ignited its flammable spray all over the hammerhead and managed to detroy the tank by taking the last hp.
Coteaz again managed to conjure invisibility onto the punisher tanks however as the tanks disappeared from sight from the enemy, something went wrong with the spell and coteaz suffered perils and a wound, unfortunately the wound was sufficient enough for him to forget one of the psychic abilities know to him and upon the roll of the dice he forgot invisibility!
The fireraptors engines roared across the battlefield with its targeting reticules scanning for potential targets. In seeing the hellbrute slightly out of cover, the order was given to engage and the autocannons fired their rounds into the monstrosity removing 1 wound. The 5 man chaos marine squad that had been protecting the hammerhead were then decimated when the cannons from the fireraptor, swung round and unleashed their ammunitions into their ranks.
The 10man kasrkin squad that had jumped out of their chimera transport just before it blew up now surveyed the battlefield in front of them. As they advanced into the ruin in front of them, they caught glimpse of the advancing Abaddon and his terminator bodyguards, In seeing the advancing threat, the sergeant barked out orders to fire and 3 plasma guns and 7 lasguns fired through the ruins and managed to kill 1 terminator. Knight Commander Pask also recognised the threat of the chaos lord and ordered the punishers to target and engage the advancing terminators. Once the smoke cleared from the 40 punisher shots, the advancing terminators had been whittled down to just abaddon and 1 terminator with 3 having been killed by the armoured division.
Turn 4 started with the firewarriors using markerlight support to fire 22 shots into the space marines that had dropped into their back lines from the droppods, however the space marine armour stood firm as only 4 brothers died from the xenos rounds.
The hellbrute staggered forward, blood pouring from the wound caused by the fireraptor. As it emerged from the ruin it descended into a crazed state firing all of it weapons at the circling aircraft however the supreme flying skills of the pilot as well as the reinforced armour meant that none of the shots hit the flyer.
A number of firewarriors advanced forward and spotted a gap within the ruins where Inquisitor coteaz had moved following the advancement of the punishers. Three of the shots found their target however the armour protecting the lord of Formosa activated and deflected each shot.
Abaddon and his solitary terminator bodyguard charged the punishers, and began striking the sides of the punisher with their weapons, abaddons strikes managed to punch a hole in the side of the tank, the force of which shook the crew inside meaning the punisher cannon would only be able to fire snap shots next turn and dropping the punisher down to 2 hp.
The alliance turn 4 began with the Space Marines advancing over the bodies of their fallen brothers and laying down rounds of bolter shots supplemented by melta and flamer fire. The cultists behind the fenceline stood no chance against the overwhelming firepower and the unit was eradicated from the battlefield. The chaos space marines bore witness to the massacre but they too bore the same fate, cut down as the rounds of the Fireraptors autocannons smashed into their lines.
The punisher tank drivers threw the tanks into reverse to gain some space between themselves and Abaddons attacks, Pasks tanks punisher cannon whirring as the 20 rending shots flew into abaddon and his solitary bodyguard. As all good bodyguards do, the terminator stood in the face of the onslaught on his master and crumpled to the ground as the shots pierced his armour and ripped apart his body.
The wyvern in the backfield switched targets from the ruins in had been targeting in the previous turns and instead targeted the unit of cultists holding the objective on the right flank. The first shell zeroed in on the cultists, smashing directly into their lines. This was quickly followed by three other shells thundering into the cultists and obliterating the chaos hencemen from the objective.
And this is where the game ended. Unfortunately due to the fact that myself, Lukan and Graham had turned up later than anticipated and the fact that Nathan lived 1hr and half away from petes we decided to call the game after turn 4.
As we totalled up the score we found that the emperors finest had prevailed over the traitorous CSM and xenos 10 – 1 as we controlled 3 of the 4 objectives (worth 3 points each) and had linebreaker, whilst Ade and Lukan had firstblood for killing the relic scorpius.
That’s it folks I have my first WIN!!!! Que fanfare and dancing girls!!!!
Even though we finished after turn 4 after a brief discussion between Nathan and myself and then myself and Lukan on the way home we believed that in turn 5 we would of potentially cleared up Ades and Lukans lists. The one unit we looked at that we might have had trouble with was Abaddon himself. We had air superiority with the fireraptor and all they had left was ground troops and the hellbrute and whilst abaddon was taking chunks out of one of the punishers, pask could of ‘full throttled’ his tank and sped off leaving abaddon in no-mans land. Once the hellbrute was dead they had nothing really that would have been able to deal with the AV14 vehicles.
In conclusion to the game it was real fun even though I think we overwhelmed them with our selections, but then again we was told to bring anything as long as it fitted within 1000 points! But maybe the fireraptor may have been overkill but it’s a staple of nathans list and anyone who has played him, knows the fireraptor will be included.
I was surprised that Lukan didnt bring his deamons and feel that if he had done so it may have been a tighter match especially with the things that could be summoned onto the board and also he may have had the opportunity to field a flying daemon prince which could of dealt with the raptor.
Personally, the wyvern and punishers were excellent for me. This was the first game that the punishers survived past turn 1 and ade for one was amazed at the devastation they dealt. Im not sure he really knew what they were or what they could do as im sure if he did he would of targeted them instead of the chimera.
Again A fantastic night of gaming with the #ws10gaming lads and my third of 7th edition, I have another planned in a couple of weeks at WHW with the #ws10gaming lads in the midlands interclub challenge in which we will play against seasoned vets and tournament players and even though ill be probably spanked out of sight im looking forward to getting some tips etc from some of the best players in the land.
But that report is for another post, so for now friends
May the emperor protect.
